Install Guide

What Goes Into a Mulch Install?

A good mulch install is mostly prep. Here is what actually happens, start to finish, when a crew does it right.

Fresh mulch installed at a home in Milford, MI by Mulch Bros

Short answer: a professional mulch install is a walk-through and measurement, picking the material, bed prep (weeds out, edges cut, old buildup raked back), delivery right to the beds, spreading 2 to 3 inches deep while keeping it off trunks and siding, and a cleanup so the driveway looks like nobody was there.

1. The walk-through

Every install should start with someone walking the beds with you. When we do installs around Milford, Highland and Novi, this is where we measure each bed, check how much old mulch is still there, look for weeds that need to come out first, and talk color. It is also the only honest way to price an install, which is why Mulch Bros does these as a free in-person assessment instead of guessing online.

2. Figuring out how many yards

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. At 3 inches deep, these are the rules of thumb we use (square feet of bed divided by the number below, rounded up to a whole yard):

Bed conditionMulch at 3"Decorative rock at 3"
New or bare bedssq ft ÷ 100sq ft ÷ 108
Refresh (some mulch left)sq ft ÷ 150sq ft ÷ 135
Light top-upsq ft ÷ 180—

Example: a 40 ft × 5 ft front bed is 200 sq ft. As a refresh that is 200 ÷ 150 = 1.33, so 2 yards. Not sure how to measure? Our bed measuring guide and mulch calculator walk you through it.

3. Bed prep: the part that makes it last

  • Weeds out first. Mulch on top of live weeds just hides them for a few weeks. They get pulled before anything goes down.
  • A clean edge. A trenched natural edge, or steel or aluminum edging, keeps mulch in the bed and the lawn out. See how to prep beds before mulch.
  • Old buildup handled. Years of stacking mulch smothers roots. If it is too deep, it gets raked back or thinned. More on that in should I remove old mulch?
  • Optional extras. Weed preventer, or fabric under rock, where it makes sense for the bed.

4. Install day

The mulch is delivered and wheeled right to each bed, then spread evenly to about 2 to 3 inches. Two details separate a good install from a fast one: mulch is pulled back from tree trunks (no “mulch volcanoes”) and kept below siding and weep holes, and bed lines are left crisp. Most of our residential installs take less than half a day.

5. Cleanup

Walks, driveway and lawn edges are blown off before the crew leaves. If you can tell where the mulch pile was, the job is not done.

What changes the price

  • Yards. Installs are priced per yard, and the per-yard price drops on bigger jobs (15+ and 25+ yards).
  • Material. Cedar costs more than dyed black, brown or red; natural undyed mulch costs less. Decorative rock runs $315 to $550 a yard installed, depending on the rock. See black vs brown vs red.
  • Prep and edging. Heavy weeding or new edging adds to the job.
  • Access. Long carries to the backyard take longer than front beds by the driveway.

FAQ

How long does a mulch install take?

Most residential installs take less than half a day. Bigger properties or heavy prep can take longer.

Do you remove the old mulch?

Not always. A thin, broken-down layer can stay. If old mulch has built up several inches, it should be raked back or thinned first. We check this at the walk-through.

Why is an install priced in person?

Bed size, old buildup, weeds and edging all change the job. Measuring in person gives you an exact number instead of a guess. The assessment is free.
